Letter to Parents Re: Help During Reading Groups

Dear Parents:

Mrs. K. is looking for a few good parents to help the class out during reading groups.  We are looking for volunteers to help us expand our shared reading activities.  Currently we have two stations during reading time, a group reading and discussion station, and a workbook/activity station.  We feel that if we could incorporate one more station that we could accelerate literacy development.  The third station that we would like to add includes a shared reading station.

Shared reading is a technique that we use that involves reading aloud a book that is appropriate for the student’s interest level, but too difficult for them to read on their own.  During shared reading the volunteer will model fluent reading with the students of a book that Mrs. K. chooses as developmentally appropriate.  After the read aloud, the stations rotate and Mrs. K. will use the story that you read to teach phonics and high-frequency words.  During the third station the students will put that phonics and vocabulary into use by doing workbook and other activities that are associated with the reading.

Reading groups take place once a day in the morning at 9:45 am.  We are asking for each volunteer to make a commitment of one hour in the morning at least once per week.  If you are interested, or have any questions or concerns about the aforementioned request, please contact me through any of the following avenues:
