11.16.2010 Reflection

Today I read with my child study subject.  He chose four books to read:
  • The Teacher from the Black Lagoon
  • Big Machines
  • The Art Teacher from the Black Lagoon
  • Civil War on Sunday
The first three of these books were picture books except for Civil War on Sunday, which was a chapter book.  I had him choose books that were at different reading levels so I could get a good feeling for where his reading comfort level was.  He read three of the books pretty well, except for the Teacher from the Black Lagoon, which he had a hard time understanding quite a few of the vocabulary words.

He told me that his mom was really excited when she received my letter to her that I was going to be doing a study with him.  He also felt like it was a great honor to be part of a college study.  I thought that this was really funny and was happy that his parents were ok with me doing a video interview with him and that he was ok with it too.  At first I was not sure how his parents would react, but it turned out that it was not a very big deal.

At this point, I had a good idea of where my study child was at in terms of reading, and could formulate a plan for the study and which assessment forms I would use.
