Today, I helped out during reading groups and assisted some of the students that were working silently at their desks. There was a good number of different types of literacy activities going on today. At any given time the students were working on alphabetizing words with the same onsets, coloring reading related pictures, working in their workbooks on compound, hyphenated and two word grouping words.
I corrected some spelling tests, one of the highlights of my practicum. The 3rd graders who are learning how to write in cursive had to write their words in print and cursive, but only their print words were corrected. I liked this way of easing them into taking tests or writing all in cursive. I do not remember my teachers conducting tests in both. I remember that we wrote in print until we learned cursive and then that’s all we used.
The third graders had free writing time today, where they were instructed to just take out a piece of paper and write for a short time. They were not given a topic or anything. They could use their imaginations and write about whatever came to mind. I liked to time to apply their imaginations to their work.
