Wow! The distributive property in 3rd grade, or even fourth grade. I didn’t learn about the distributive property of multiplication until I began learning algebra in junior high. Seeing things like this in the classroom makes me wonder where and when the change happened. When did teachers figure out that 3rd graders were capable of working with the distributive property. It reminds you how students will rise to a challenge if you give it to them or they will not if you don’t and they do not know that it exists. I was happy to see this used so early on and that those young minds were being given the credit they deserved.
During read aloud time, some of the students were laughing along with the story. Oddly enough they were students that were sitting closest to the teacher at the front of the room. The closer to the back students were not as attentive to the story and some were resting their head on their arms. I did not take notice of it, but I have caught myself during story time making more eye contact with those students who are closest to me. I wonder if this has anything to do with the attentiveness of the front of the room students as opposed to the back of the room students. Also, I really want to take that storytelling class.
