Today was a great science lesson. She began with an introduction to new vocabulary and a metacognitive discussion amongst group members about what they meant. She always gets them thinking their own thoughts before she gives them information. The white board lesson on the layers of the Earth was a very good visual and audio component, which she followed up on with a kinesthetic component involving examining a half of an apple (seeing, touching, smelling, feeling) and comparing it to the layers of the Earth that they had just learned about. She encouraged the use of a double bubble map to have the students compare and contrast. Effective use of thinking maps gives the students a way to a way to create a visual of their thinking that they can easily share with others or file away for themselves to reference. She also had the students draw the layers of the Earth and label them. During this lesson the information was reinforced by group discussion, putting knowledge directly into immediate use through the creation of thinking map and drawing. I’d say this information has a pretty good chance of being remembered the next time they meet over it. She added excitement by giving a bonus question that the students could answer to earn a buck.
