10.21.2010 Reflection

Today was the first lesson that I did with the children and I was nervous, they were excited and Mrs. K. sat quietly in back and observed.  My objective with this lesson was based in helping students deepen their sense of place.  I had them create a field notebook page and create a map of an everyday environment.  I wanted them to develop new language, new concepts and to see the world around the in a new light.  Also they will develop analytical skills of scientific investigation and to practice methods of analysis, visualization and presentation of data in the form of a map.

I did a quick lesson in the beginning of the at 2:20 for about 10 minutes.  I talked to the students about what we were going to do and I also led them through labeling their page of their journal that their notes were going to go on.  I also directed them to bring a second piece of paper outside with them so they could draw a map of the playground on it.

Around 2:30 pm we went outside and the students spread out to all areas of the playground to begin writing and drawing.  Mrs. K. and I walked around and answered questions and made sure that the students stayed on task.  It was interesting to see which students drew first and then wrote, and vice versa.  Some of the students who did not quite get the instructions inside the classroom needed to be led through labeling their page correctly again and I did this with them at the covered picnic table next to the playground.

At around 3:00 pm Mrs. K. and I rounded the students up to go inside and get ready to leave for the day.  I ended the lesson with a couple quick questions about how the students liked the assignments and if they thought that they had enough time today to complete it.  Most of the students said that they needed more time to complete the assignment, so I told them that they next time I come in that we can go outside one more time so that they can finish their maps and sentences about the playground.
