Dear Parents:
On Monday, January 10th, 2011 the Make Your Dreams Come True School will be holding its annual Read-A-Thon and book fair. The Read-A-Thon will be held all day in the school gymnasium from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. A section of the gym will be roped off for Scholastic’s Book Fair Experience, which will donate 10% of its proceeds to our school’s educational technology fund so that we can continue to provide your children with an education that prepares them to be competitive and tech savvy.
On the day of the read-a-thon, the students can wear their most comfortable pajamas and are encouraged to bring a sleeping bag and pillow to make themselves comfortable reading on the gymnasium floor. Starting with 1st grade the students will get 45 minutes to read and each successive grade will receive and extra 15 minutes of reading time as the length of books gets longer as the students get older. The students will be challenged to read as many books as they can before their time is up. The student who wins the most books in each class will receive a gift certificate from scholastic to purchase more books. The runners up will get to pick one book from the fair and the rest of the students will receive a commemorative book mark.
I am sending home a scholastic catalogue with your children that I would ask you to look through together and decide which books you would like to order. You can fill out the order form in the back of the catalogue or logon to the scholastic.com website and order them at home. If you are planning on filling out the form and sending it in to the school, they need to be turned in no later than a week before the book fair on Monday, January 3, 2011. Also, if you are ordering online, please login to the MYDCTS account using the login name: MYDCTS and pswd: Love to Read. The students can pick up their orders on the day of the book fair before they begin reading and can read their new books during the event. Even if you don’t order before the fair, there will be books available to purchase the day of.
On the day of the event I am asking for at least 5 parent volunteers per classroom to help out fulfilling various roles. Such as order finder and deliverer, reading buddy, book finder, hallway escort for the 3rd graders returning to class and reading contest score keeper. Our 3rd and 4th grade class will attend the book fair from 9:30 am until 10:00 am. They will be in the read-a-thon from 10:00 am until 11:30 am for the 3rd graders, and 11:45 am for the 4th graders. Posted on this blog is a form that you can fill out to let me know which position you would like to fill and what time you will be able to volunteer with us for if you are unable to stay the whole time.
