12.3.2010 Reflection

Today I had the opportunity to walk around a lot and help the students during reading groups.  I liked this one on one time, but I was not sure how much I should help them because the work they were doing was going to be used for assessment and they were working on things that they had already received instruction on.  Sometimes I felt like maybe I was giving them too much information.  I think this is something that I just need a little more experience with.  A couple of times Mrs. K. caught what the students were asking me and she told them that they already knew the answer and that they had to figure it out themselves.

During the multiplication lesson I noticed how Mrs. K. was teaching by carrying the remainder, just as they do when they add.  I think the parallel in procedures really helps the students generalize how to work out a multiplication problem that has double digits.  This time during the lesson the gradual release of responsibility happened quicker than the first time I observed Mrs. K. teach multiplication.  The students used their own little white boards for this exercise and worked the problems out at their desks.  They were also given the opportunity to create their own problems and then switch boards to have another student figure out their problem.  I liked the social aspect of this activity and thought about how fun it is for students to come up with something they think is clever or unique and then trade it with their friend to see if they can figure it out.  Loved it!
